A silent 999 call does not automatically bring the police — on a mobile, you must press 55. If you dial 999 and can't speak, listen for the prompt and press 55 (or cough or tap the phone). What the "Silent Solution" is
The Silent Solution is the UK system that helps people who dial 999 but can't safely speak — for example if speaking would alert someone dangerous nearby. It exists because thousands of accidental "pocket" 999 calls happen every day, so operators can't send police to every silent call. The system needs one small signal from you to tell a genuine emergency apart from an accidental one.
How it works, step by step
- Dial 999 from any phone.
- If you can't speak, stay on the line and listen.
- On a mobile, an automated system will ask you to press 55 — do it (or cough or tap the keypad if asked). Your call is then transferred to the police.
- On a landline, if you can only make noise (a cough, a tap, background sound) rather than speak, the operator can transfer you to the police. A landline also gives the police your location automatically.
- Once connected to the police, they may ask yes/no questions you can answer by tapping or coughing.
The mistake to avoid
The most common myth is that a completely silent 999 call will bring help on its own. On a mobile, it won't — without the "press 55" signal or some response, the call can be ended. Knowing this one detail in advance could matter enormously in a moment when you can't think clearly.
